Oil Portraits, learning from the Masters

In This 6 week online course, we will be copying and studying the works of Masters like Uglow, Bonnard, Van Gogh, Manet.

Very different paintings, unique stiles, great techniques, a feast for the eyes.

This course is the perfect occasion for exploring different styles, improve our technique, and develop a personal style. Uglow “mosaic” approach, is very helpful to expand our color palette, keep the colors clean, learning to see more colors in our subject, and focus on its volumetric aspect. Bonnard use of the color is unique, he made his images vibrate with chromatic contrast, It is impossible to determine if the subjects depicted are in the process of materializing or disintegrating.

Masterpieces by Mary Cassat, Van Gogh, Manet, will also be studied and copied, enjoyed. This course is, in short, a great learning opportunity.

  • Paint: alizarine crimson, cadmium red medium ultramarine blue, cobalt blue cadmium;
  • yellow lemon, cadmium yellow, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, burnt umber, black, white;

  • A variety of brushes: hog and synthetic will do; Filbert or bright, #2, 6, 8, and 12 will do. You will also need a few round, synthetic brushes, #2 and 4. You can also use the colors that you already have and we will discuss about these materials in class;
  • Linseed oil (refined linseed oil will suffice), Galkid or Liquin, Turpenoid or other low odor solvent;
