Portrait Drawing with the Masters, a Technical Foundation Course

The head and face are probably the most rewarding parts of the human figure for an artist to draw or paint. Head and face can also be an intimidating subject because of its inherent complexities. This 6 weeks, in person course, will provide the fundamental structural, anatomical and proportional elements necessary to create correct and proportioned portraits.

During each 3 hour session the students will practice drawing a portrait working from Master’s artworks and from photographic references I will provide. The participants will be also encouraged to prepare self-portraits from life or from photographs, to practice the drawing techniques used in class.

During the 6 session of this course, we will practice a variety of techniques: graphite on white paper, charcoal on white paper, charcoal and chalk on toned paper, reduction technique, trois crayon technique. Measuring techniques will also discussed

The methods and techniques we will practice in this course, will give the students a good drawing foundation and can be also directed toward figure drawing or any other subject.

Materials:

  • Drawing paper: start with Canson or Strathmore drawing paper, 11” by 14” or larger, (don’t use newsprint paper);  we will also use white charcoal paper and toned paper but we will discuss about these other types of paper during the first session.
  • Graphite pencils in 2B, B, HB gradations; vine charcoal in sticks and compressed charcoal in sticks and pencil.
  • Conte crayon pencils or sticks in red earth, black and white. You can also opt for red black and white color pencils.
  • Blending stumps, kneaded erasers, pencil erasers, pencil sharpeners, sand paper.
