Open Drawing Sessions #40: The Skull in Chiaroscuro

We all think skulls are cool until we become one, so let’s draw a skull before it’s too late!

This 2:30 hours online session is dedicated to drawing a skull in chiaroscuro using charcoal and chalk on toned paper, practicing the open form concept, typical of the Baroque period, where the play between light and shadow creates unpredictable shapes and dramatic effects. This will also be a great occasion to create a drawing with an extremely extended tonal scale and practice rendering voluminous volumes!

Materials:

  • Charcoal sticks in medium, soft and extra soft gradations. My favorite brand is Nitram, but you can use any charcoal brand you are used to. Do not use willow charcoal because it is too weak for our purposes.
  • Compressed charcoal pencils in medium, soft and extra soft gradation, General’s is a very good and cheap brand.
  • White chalk in pencils and-or sticks.
  • Paper: Medium value, tan or gray toned paper such as Canson, Mi teintes, Fabriano, Hahnemuhle or Strathmore Charcoal toned.
  • Kneaded eraser, pencil sharpener, sand paper.
