Oil Painting Foundation: the Portrait

The Portrait in Oil courses turned out to be very popular and requested, so I decided to offer another oil portrait Foundation course, where we will be creating artworks copying a portrait by Manet and one by Degas, to practice their direct painting technique. We will also be creating a painting using a photographic reference to practice the indirect method of layering colors over a monochromatic rendering of the subject.

In this 6 sessions of three hours each, the participants will be encouraged to work on an independent project painting  a portrait of a subject of their choice. This is a good way to start making personal aesthetic and technical choices, and put to work the notions discussed and practiced in class. Composition, color mixing, paint handling, materials, color theory and the techniques employed by a few masters, are some of the topics, among others, that will be discussed and practiced.
