This Foundation Crash Course is dedicated to creating a figure drawing in graphite on white paper, probably the most didactically efficient drawing method that permits the artist to practice a great variety of foundation techniques: measuring, tonal rendering, development of the general qualities of your mark making, learn the proportions and the volumetric structure of the human figure.

We will start the first session blocking in the main volumes of the figure as basic geometric volumes to create a “scaffolding” that will be gradually developed in a more a precise line drawing of the subject.

The second session will be devoted to refine the initial line drawing, focusing on the organic aspects of the human figure, rendering the drawing tonally using a progressive development of the tonal range, from the highest highlights to the darkest values, obtaining a convincing sense of volume and realistic effect.

This course is perfect for the artists approaching Figure Drawing and those that want to further develop their existing skills.

Materials:

• Graphite pencils in HB, B, 2B

• A pad of drawing paper, such as Strathmore Drawing series 400 in medium finish, size about 11” by 14”

• Erasers and sharpening tools
