Foundation Crash Course, the Portrait in Oil #321

The Foundation Crash Courses series offers the opportunity to practice a technique or subject, in this case portrait painting in oil, or try it for the first time in a format designed to fit more easily in your busy schedule and to make it more affordable.

In the two, 2 ½ hour sessions of this course we will paint an oil portrait from photographic reference I will provide, using a systematic approach to build up the painting, from the initial drawing on the canvas, to blocking in the main areas of color, to expanding the tonal and chromatic range, and bring the work to a finish. We will practice color mixing considering chroma, value and temperature, practice brushwork, discuss materials and more.

For this portrait, we will use a limited number of colors (listed below), a very efficient method to practice color mixing, obtain pleasant color harmonies and explore in depth the chromatic possibilities of the few available colors.

This short course is the perfect occasion to try your hand at oil painting without committing too much time or money, or todevelop and refine your oil painting skills.
