Facial Expressions with the Masters

Copying portraits created by Old Masters, is an incredible source of learning: we can practice a variety of techniques, study the individual style of an artist, connect the artwork with a specific artistic and historical period. Spending 3 hours copying a work, also gives us access to details that might otherwise escape our attention, discovering interesting technical or expressive aspects of an artwork.

But I want to include another element to this 6-week course: all the Master portraits we will be working from, depict a variety of facial expressions, from passionate to dramatic to subtle, and everything in between, making this course also an occasion to study the characteristics of the various facial expressions in detail.

Elements of anatomy, the structure of the head, and facial features will also be discussed, giving us the possibility to better read and appreciate the artworks we will be copying.

A fun way to improve our technical, aesthetic, and expressive portraiture skills
