Expressing Emotions an in depth course on facial expressions #288

Happiness, surprise, sadness, seduction, anger, contempt, indifference, elation… The human face is a kaleidoscope of mutating emotions. This online course is dedicated to the exploration of the fascinating complexity and variety of the facial expressions.

This course is divided in 6 sessions of 3 hours each, during which we will have ample time to develop and hone drawing skills and practice a variety of techniques and draw along during my demonstration, where we will discuss and draw the essential anatomical structure of the head, its physiognomic characteristics, the great variety of facial expressions and the muscles that produce them, and create a number of artworks using a variety of techniques using photographic references and making Master’s  copies.

The recordings of the sessions will be accessible for the duration of one year, giving you occasion to keep practicing the material discussed in this course.

Materials:

  • Drawing paper: start with Canson or Strathmore Drawing paper, 11” by 14” or larger, we will also use white charcoal paper and toned paper but we will discuss about these other types of paper during the first session.
  • Graphite pencils in 2B, B, HB gradations; compressed charcoal pencil in B, 2B, 4B and 6B (hard, medium, soft and extra soft), the brand Wolff’s makes a sampler pack that contains these four gradations.
  • Conte crayon pencils or Pitt pastel pencils in red earth, black and white. You can also opt for red, black and white color pencils.
  • Blending stumps, kneaded erasers, pencil erasers, pencil sharpeners, sand paper

His paintings have been exhibited in galleries in Europe and the United States. He is the author of Basic Human Anatomy (2016), an art instruction best seller and classic reference book, and Dynamic Human Anatomy (2021). His latest book , Drawing the Body has been released in December 2024.
