Drawing Crash Courses Raphael’s Drawing Techniques #329

Get ready for the Raphael’s show with this New Renaissance Atelier Drawing Crash Course!

I am offering this course dedicated to Raphael in occasion of the show of his art now held at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art. Copying this sublime master’s work is also a thorough voyage of discovery during which we will have occasion to appreciate his technique, the elegance of his style, explore the precision of his marks, the expressive and dynamic qualities of his figures, the anatomy, the structure, the composition.

During the 2 session of this course, we will copy a few of Raphael’s drawings executed in a number of techniques: red chalk, charcoal, ink and ink washes. We will work from photographic references of Andrea Morani, posed like in some of Raphael’s drawings, to better understand and put to use his technique.

Materials:

  • Drawing paper: a pad or a few sheets of good drawing paper, such as Strathmore Drawing or stratmore Bristol, or Canson, in medium finish, size about 12” by 14”or so
  • Drawing material for the first session: red earth pastels such as Cretacolor sanguine, Pitt pastel or oil base Pitt pastel. You can also use colored pencils such as like Faber Castell Polychromos or Caran D’Ache Pablo, but you can also use any brand you like of you are familiar with. During the first session, we will discuss more Drawing materials for the second session.
  • Pencil sharpeners, sand paper and, if you have it, a small box cutter.
