Watercolor Foundation Crash Courses: Painting the Sky #318

Expand the range of your watercolor technical skills with this two online sessions foundation watercolor course, dedicated to painting clouds and sky, practicing to create dramatic stormy effectsmisty atmospheric moodscrisp blue sky of a windy Summer day.

A convincingly executed sky can make a substantial difference in a landscape painting, setting its mood, energy, drama. During the 3 hours of each session, we will create a number of watercolor studies, both from photographic references and from imagination, exploring techniques, methods, materials.

We will practice a number of techniqueswet on wet to obtain fluid, soft effects and learn to let the paint move on its own; wet on dry to create crisp, sharp edges and wet on damp to subtly control the definition the edges of the clouds or other elements of a landscape.

The format of this new series of Crash courses is designed to fit more easily in your busy schedule and to make it more affordableOpen to all levels.

Materials:

  • A few sheets of cold press watercolor paper, 140lb will do, we will work in a relatively small size, about 12” by 16” or so.
  • Watercolor paint: you can use the colors you have but these will be helpful: ultramarine blue, cobalt blue, ultramarine violet, alizarine crimson, yellow ochre, burnt Sienna or Venetian red, sap green, black. We will discuss more colors in class
  • A #8 or #10 round, synthetic or Kolinsky brush and a ½” or ¾” flat, synthetic brush
