Figure Drawing Foundation

This Figure Drawing course is dedicated to the fundamentals necessary to the artist that wants to approach drawing the human figure. In this 6-sessions course, we will learn how to draw the figure as basic stereometric volumes, draw and learn the superficial muscles of the body, draw the external forms accurately practicing tonal rendering using a variety of techniques: graphite on white paper, charcoal and chalk on white and toned paper, reduction technique, red black and white technique. We will create a good number of drawings of figures in different poses, at rest, in movement, in foreshortening, using reference images or from imagination, rendering the body at first as basic blocks, and gradually adding the main muscular volumes and finally the external forms.

Materials:

  • A pad of good quality Drawing paper, such as Stratmore Drawing series 400, Medium finish, size 11” by 14 or so.
  • Graphite pencils in HB, B and 2Bgradations, colored pencils in red earth (such as Venetian red, Indian red, burnt Sienna or Sanguine), dark blue and black. I like Faber Castell Polychromos because they have a good pigment load and they are slightly harder than other brands. Other good Brands are Caran D’ache, Derwent, Stabilo, you can also use any colored pencils you like or already have.
  • Compressed charcoal pencils in Hard, medium, soft and extra soft gradations (General’s) or B, 2b, 4B, 6B (Wolff’s), white chalk pencils.
  • Sharpeners and erasers.
  • Other materials will be discussed in class.
